Ain’t No Sunshine cover – Bill Withers | Soul Blues
“Ain’t No Sunshine” is one of those songs that proves you don’t need a complicated arrangement to create something powerful. Bill Withers built the song around a simple, haunting progression and a vocal performance filled with space, tension, and emotion.
For my version, I wanted to bring that same feeling to the electric guitar. Rather than copying the original arrangement, I approach it as a soul-blues piece, using blues phrasing, dynamics, bends, vibrato, and space to let the guitar carry the emotion of the song.
That’s also an important part of how I approach blues guitar in general. Knowing scales and patterns is useful, but the real goal is learning how to turn those notes into phrases that actually say something.
“Ain’t No Sunshine” is a beautiful example of how much you can do with relatively little — a strong progression, a memorable melody, and the confidence to leave some space between the notes.
Performed and arranged for guitar by Bas de Beer.
Original song written and recorded by Bill Withers.
