Little Wing – Exploring Hendrix’s Chordal Style
For this version of Little Wing, I spent some time looking into the chordal style Jimi Hendrix used so beautifully.
One thing I found particularly interesting was how Hendrix would embellish fairly simple chord shapes with additional notes — often the 6th and 9th — while mixing chord tones with little melodic phrases around them. It’s a big part of what gives his rhythm playing that flowing, almost lead-guitar quality.
I came across a lesson that showed some basic chord shapes together with notes that naturally work around those chords. Rather than learning the song note-for-note, I used those ideas as a framework and applied them to Little Wing in my own way.
It was a really enjoyable way to approach the song, because you’re not just playing chords or playing lead — you’re moving between the two.
